After Colac Imperials’ senior team finished second-last on the ladder in 2008, two of the club’s long-time members, Tim Hassett and Peter Scott, decided to spearhead a rebuild.
The idea was that Hassett and Scott would head up a new-look committee as joint-presidents. But things didn’t go to plan.
“We couldn’t find a coach, so at that point I decided to coach and Peter took on the presidency,” recalled Hassett, who played in the Cats’ most recent senior premiership in 1995.
On the field, the club continued to struggle, with its senior team winning just three games in 2009. Off the field, however, its fortunes were beginning to turn around.
“We were able to get a few players who’d come through our juniors back to the club, and we started to get a pretty good feeling around the place,” Hassett said.
Indeed, Colac Imperials have been on the improve ever since.
Last year, with Hassett now the president, the Cats made the Colac and District league grand final.
They lost the big game to Lorne by 29 points, but this season they are again up near the top of the ladder with the finals just around the corner.
“I’m extremely excited,” Hassett said. “Looking across our whole club, we’ve got six or seven of our football and netball teams in the premiership mix.
